Breast asymmetry can ranged from very minor to gross asymmetry involving volume, shape, nipple position and sometimes, underlying rib cage asymmetry. The aim of surgery is to help correct/improve these asymmetries.
Breast asymmetry is extremely common and probably around 95% of females have some degree of difference between the two breasts. The asymmetry can be related to shapes, nipple height, volume and in some cases, there are issues such as breast constriction, specific areas of tissue deficit, over-projection of nipple areola complex (Herniation).
For most females, this is not an issue but for those with 1 or more cup size difference between the two sides, finding bras that are suitable, going swimming or undressing can become an issue.
There are multiple techniques including volume replacement, contour re-shaping that can help to improve the asymmetry. Mr Saour can advise on the most appropriate treatment after consultation and examination.
The results are usually lifelong but may be impacted by weight change/pregnancy and ageing.
There is a significant amount of evidence that suggests a strong association between smoking, high body mass index (BMI), hormone therapy and diabetes on increasing complications, particularly wound healing, infection and deep venous thromboembolism (DVT). Minor wound Infection and wound dehiscence are the most common complications, followed by bleeding and/or seroma formation. Occasionally some excess skin and fat remains at the corner of the scars termed “dog ears”, and these can be removed under local anaesthesia once the scar has settled. Other possible complications include fat necrosis (hard lumps under the skin that gradually fade), changes in sensation of the nipple, prominent scarring and asymmetry. Mr Saour will discuss the potential risks during your consultation.
